Fitness Tuesday – Resistance Bands

May 23, 2017

It’s Fitness Tuesday here on Just Jodi Style and I am here to share with you my newest work out obsession. We all have seen resistance bands in the gym, but we don’t always know what exactly to do with them. I always though that you could just stand on them and do bicep curls all day. That is not the only thing that you can do with them. Depending on how you are standing and what position you are in there are so many different muscles you can work with your resistance band. The pack that I purchased from Amazon for $22.99 comes with ankle straps and also just straps you can use with your hands. I like this better because the other bands where it essentially looks like a big rubber band I found more difficult to use on my own without the risk of hurting myself. Anytime Fitness posted this image online of some of the many exercises you can do with resistance bands. I have been using mine for about a week now and I can truly tell the difference not only in my arms, but also in my legs as well. This next week while using them I am going to try and use them to work on my back and glute muscles as well. Anyone can do this in the comfort of your own home. The one suggestion I do have is go to a work out class that uses resistance bands so that an instructor can better help you with your form. It’s crazy to think I know, but there is a wrong way to use them. After a few times going to a class that uses them then I think its safe to use at home on your own. Now lets all get some last minute work outs in before the big holiday weekend! Hope you all have a great day.

Fitness Tuesday – Summer Body Ready

May 16, 2017

It’s Fitness Tuesday here on Just Jodi Style and I want to discuss something that everyone knows is coming…SUMMER! With Memorial Day coming up soon everyone is a panic to get their beach bodies ready. I have noticed this personally in all of my work out classes these past two weeks. Normally the 7 am spin class I attend is 75% full, but now there is always a waitlist to get into the class. I want to stress to everyone to not overdue it just to get beach body ready. In reality that body won’t stay long if you are just trying to get an easy fix. For example I have seen a ton of people doing juice cleanses to drop a few lbs fast, but the moment you start back on solid food the weight just comes right back on. Trust me I have done 2 juice cleanses in my lifetime. Yes, I lost a great deal of weight while doing them, but the moment I started back eating normally food all the weight just came right back on. The best way to keep your body great all summer long is to be consistent. Yes this will requiring working out, but you will also need to watch what you are eating and drinking. Something that I learned helps with your metabolism is to start your mourning off with a hot cup of water with a little bit of lemon. This will help jump start your metabolism and also I have noticed that it has helped me when I feel like I may be getting sick. Another thing that helps is portion control. I know that everyone posts about their meal prep for the week, but that gets boring after a while. You want variety and there is no shame in admitting that. I personally look at my schedule for the week every Sunday night to determine my meals for the week before hitting the grocery store Monday morning. I do this because Monday SoulCycle classes open up for the next week and that way I can also plan my meals around my workouts as well. It’s a win win situation you plan your week of fitness ahead of time and what you will eat. Now I don’t plan specifically what day I will be eating certain meals, but I plan out how many meals I will eat at home and enough options for all of those days. I hope this helps all of you with planning your summer bodies. Have a great day <3

Hump Day Treat: Sweet Potato Fries

April 5, 2017

Happy Wednesday! One of my favorite things to get when I go to Bareburger in New York City is there sweet potato fries. I have never made them for myself, but I thought this week I would give it a try. I gave it my own little twist to make them a little bit sweeter than they normally are. Here is what you will need

Ingredients:

– sweet potato ( if you are making for more than just yourself then add more)

-olive oil

-salt

– pepper

-cinnamon sugar

Directions

1.Preheat the oven to 450 degrees

2.Line cookie sheet with aluminum foil ( you can use parchment paper as well).

3.Coat the cookie sheet with cooking spray.

4.On a cutting board peel the sweet potato then cut it into slices.

5.In a bowl place the sweet potato slices and pour enough olive oil to coat all the slices. Sprinkle some salt and pepper and mix it all around.

6.Lay the slices on the cookie sheet in a single layer.

7.Sprinkle some cinnamon sugar on top of the slices.

8.Place in the oven and cook for about 15 minutes.

9.Take out of the oven and flip each slice over. If you want sprinkle a bit more cinnamon sugar on the other side. Then cook for another 10 – 15 minutes.

10.Take out of the oven and let them cool for about 10 minutes before eating.
ENJOY!

Hump Day Treat – Vegan Sloppy Joe’s

February 8, 2017

Happy Wednesday! For today’s hump day treat I wanted to share a recipe that everyone has been asking me about since I posted it in my instagram story on Monday night. For those of you who were asking they are vegan sloppy joe’s. You read that right vegan sloppy joe’s! I personally have only had sloppy joe’s maybe twice in my life and that was during summers at sleep away camp, but I had never had vegan sloppy joe’s until recently. A group of my friends we all get together every Monday night to watch The Bachelor and all the other shows including The Bachelorette and Bachelor in Paradise. My friend Ashley is a vegetarian and one of our other friends Riki is also vegetarian, but on top of that is gluten and dairy free. We all take turns making different dishes, but it has been a challenge finding something that everyone will and can eat. This dish that Ashley made is probably one of my favorites and is so filling that I personally didn’t even eat dessert! That is something that is very abnormal for me if you know me well. Here is what you need to make these delicious vegan sloppy joe’s:

Ingredients: (serves about 6)

1 tablespoon extra virgin olive oil

1 small onion, diced

1 red or yellow sweet pepper, diced

2 sticks of celery, finely chopped

1 teaspoon ground cumin

1 teaspoon chilli powder

1 cup (200g) French lentils

1- 28oz (796ml) can tomato sauce

3 tablespoons tomato paste

1 teaspoon Sriracha sauce

1 teaspoon salt

2 teaspoons balsamic vinegar

6 whole-wheat or sprouted grain buns, sliced in half or you can also use lettuce cups instead!

*If you want add additional toppings such as avocado, cheese, pickles, or sliced onions. Whatever you want!

Directions

1.Heat the olive oil in a medium, heavy-bottomed pot over medium heat.

2.Add the diced onion, pepper and celery. Cook for about 5 minutes and stir it all around until they are soft.

3.Then sprinkle in the cumin and chilli powder. After this let it cook for about a minute.

4.Add the lentils. Mix everything around.

5.Then add 3 cups of water, tomato sauce, tomato paste and sriracha. Mix it all around

6.Increase the heat to high and bring everything to a simmer. Cook this way for about 30 minutes uncovered stirring occasionally. If you notice that the level falls below the lentils then you can add more water.

7.Now do a taste test and if they lentils are tender then add salt and balsamic. Stir it all together and let it cook for one more minute after stirring.

8.Then serve and enjoy!
Hope you guys enjoyed today’s recipe! If you are in New York City like I am hope everyone is ready for the snow storm we are about to have tomorrow 🙂 <3
