Fitness Tuesday: Organization

May 30, 2017

Happy Tuesday! I hope everyone had a great Memorial Day Weekend and are settling back into the work week. Everyone always asks me how I am so diligent with my work out routine with work and also taking care of Stella. The answer is simple…Organization. I know a lot of people use their calendars on their phones and I do too, but it is always a good idea to have a backup. After an incident a few years ago where I lost everything on my phone including my calendar I now swear by also having a paper calendar. In college my friend Jorie introduced me to the Erin Condren LifePlanner and since then I am hooked! Since then her products have increased tremendously including amazing new designs. Unlike other calendars you see in your local Staples or Office Depot the Erin Condren LifePlanners are so sturdy that even after walking home one day in the pouring rain it was still perfect! By visually seeing my week in my LifePlanner I am able to plan out my week of work outs. I also know by now that SoulCycle sign ups are at noon on Monday, but they always show the schedule a week in advance. I also have a back up plan incase for some odd reason I am not able to get into a class or need to change my class around due to a change in my work schedule. After doing this for the past year I now have it down to a science. The only tricky part is when I try to add in a new work out class and figuring out how their sign up system works and when their schedules are released. I am telling you all that organization is key in any fitness journey, but it is all worth it when you see all of your results from some hard work! Head on over to the Erin Condren website to get your own LifePlanner now.

Hump Day Treat: Vegetarian Chili

May 24, 2017

It’s Wednesday so it’s time for another hump day treat recipe for you all! Now every Monday night a bunch of my friends and I gather together to watch The Bachelor / Bachelorette / Bachelor in Paradise depending on the time of the year. One of my friends came up with the idea that each week we would rotate who would bring either alcohol, appetizers, main course and dessert for the week. If you cook the main meal one week that means the following week you don’t have to bring anything! The only problem is in our group we have a lot of allergies including gluten free, dairy free and vegetarian. Try finding a main course that fits all of those criteria’s people! Not to worry this week I found something that worked for everyone. Recently I got a slow cooker from my Mom and needless to say I am very excited about it. I decided to make vegetarian chili in the slow cooker for Bachelor night. Anyone else remember those infomericals where the guy said, “Set it and…FORGET IT!” That is how I feel about a slow cooker. I just put all of the ingredients into the slow cooker and set it on high for two hours and like magic it was ready to go. Thanks to allrecipes.com I was able to find the perfect vegetarian chili. There are a few changes I made to it personally. I didn’t add peppers into my chili and I also used a sweet onion when the recipe didn’t specify what kind. Here is what you will need:

Ingredients:

  • 1 (19 ounce) can black bean soup
  • 1 (15 ounce) can kidney beans, rinsed and drained
  • 1 (15 ounce) can garbanzo beans, rinsed and drained
  • 1 (16 ounce) can vegetarian baked beans
  • 1 (14.5 ounce) can chopped tomatoes in puree
  • 1 (15 ounce) can whole kernel corn, drained
  • 1 onion, chopped
  • 1 green bell pepper, chopped
  • 2 stalks celery, chopped
  • 2 cloves garlic, chopped
  • 1 tablespoon chili powder
  • 1 tablespoon dried parsley
  • 1 tablespoon dried oregano
  • 1 tablespoon dried basil

I personally added sliced avocado on top and for the few of us that could eat dairy I added a sprinkle of Mexican cheese on top. This recipe makes enough to feed 5 people at least 3 bowls each! Crazy I know, but it’s true. Two hours on high in the slow cooker like I said is all you need. Hope everyone is ready for Memorial Day Weekend! Have a great day <3

Fitness Tuesday – Resistance Bands

May 23, 2017

It’s Fitness Tuesday here on Just Jodi Style and I am here to share with you my newest work out obsession. We all have seen resistance bands in the gym, but we don’t always know what exactly to do with them. I always though that you could just stand on them and do bicep curls all day. That is not the only thing that you can do with them. Depending on how you are standing and what position you are in there are so many different muscles you can work with your resistance band. The pack that I purchased from Amazon for $22.99 comes with ankle straps and also just straps you can use with your hands. I like this better because the other bands where it essentially looks like a big rubber band I found more difficult to use on my own without the risk of hurting myself. Anytime Fitness posted this image online of some of the many exercises you can do with resistance bands. I have been using mine for about a week now and I can truly tell the difference not only in my arms, but also in my legs as well. This next week while using them I am going to try and use them to work on my back and glute muscles as well. Anyone can do this in the comfort of your own home. The one suggestion I do have is go to a work out class that uses resistance bands so that an instructor can better help you with your form. It’s crazy to think I know, but there is a wrong way to use them. After a few times going to a class that uses them then I think its safe to use at home on your own. Now lets all get some last minute work outs in before the big holiday weekend! Hope you all have a great day.

Hump Day Treat – Duck Bacon Mac n Cheese

May 17, 2017

You now what day it is….. HUMPDAY!!! We are half way through the week everyone! I am so excited that here in New York City it is starting to finally get warm and feel like SUMMER!!! There are so many times that I have different things in my fridge and I don’t know how some ingredients could work together and make something different. I will be the first to admit that I have made some dishes in the past that in theory should have been good, but in reality were really horrible. One of those ideas that wasn’t horrible was Bacon Mac n Cheese. As I have previously posted before I am normally not a huge bacon eater and haven’t been my entire life until I tried duck bacon. Duck bacon is thicker and in my opinion juicier than regular bacon. When making bacon mac n cheese there is no need to cook the two together if you just want to eat the two together. My go to mac n cheese has been the new Cracker Barrel white sharp cheddar. In my house one of the staple appetizers that my Mom puts out for our guests are slices of sharp cheddar Cracker Barrel cheese. Now if you are looking for a great sharp cheddar cheese that isn’t expensive Cracker Barrel is the answer. When making bacon mac n cheese make your mac n cheese like it says on the box and once that is finished mix in your crispy thin slices of duck bacon. I suggest that if you are mixing your mac n cheese together in the pot you cooked your noodles in (which is what I normally do to avoid more dirty dishes) I would then suggest you putting the pot cover over the mac n cheese for about 3 minutes. This will allow the bacon juices to be absorbed into the mac n cheese. If you want to do something even more creative with your dish here is an idea for you all. After mixing the duck bacon with the mac n cheese take a pyrex dish and pour in your bacon mac n cheese mix. Cover the top of the bacon mac n cheese with more bacon and some bread crumbs. Use the broil function on your oven and place the pyrex in the oven until the top is golden brown. This will give your dish that extra crunchy taste. Hope you all enjoy today’s humpday treat recipe. <3

Fitness Tuesday – Summer Body Ready

May 16, 2017

It’s Fitness Tuesday here on Just Jodi Style and I want to discuss something that everyone knows is coming…SUMMER! With Memorial Day coming up soon everyone is a panic to get their beach bodies ready. I have noticed this personally in all of my work out classes these past two weeks. Normally the 7 am spin class I attend is 75% full, but now there is always a waitlist to get into the class. I want to stress to everyone to not overdue it just to get beach body ready. In reality that body won’t stay long if you are just trying to get an easy fix. For example I have seen a ton of people doing juice cleanses to drop a few lbs fast, but the moment you start back on solid food the weight just comes right back on. Trust me I have done 2 juice cleanses in my lifetime. Yes, I lost a great deal of weight while doing them, but the moment I started back eating normally food all the weight just came right back on. The best way to keep your body great all summer long is to be consistent. Yes this will requiring working out, but you will also need to watch what you are eating and drinking. Something that I learned helps with your metabolism is to start your mourning off with a hot cup of water with a little bit of lemon. This will help jump start your metabolism and also I have noticed that it has helped me when I feel like I may be getting sick. Another thing that helps is portion control. I know that everyone posts about their meal prep for the week, but that gets boring after a while. You want variety and there is no shame in admitting that. I personally look at my schedule for the week every Sunday night to determine my meals for the week before hitting the grocery store Monday morning. I do this because Monday SoulCycle classes open up for the next week and that way I can also plan my meals around my workouts as well. It’s a win win situation you plan your week of fitness ahead of time and what you will eat. Now I don’t plan specifically what day I will be eating certain meals, but I plan out how many meals I will eat at home and enough options for all of those days. I hope this helps all of you with planning your summer bodies. Have a great day <3

Mother’s Day Week – Hump Day Treat Serving Dishes

May 11, 2017

Happy Wednesday! I hope everyone has had a great day today and is ready for the weekend. For today’s hump day treat I wanted to include something that is great for serving your treats.I think a great gift for your Mom this Mother’s day are glass serving dishes to serve there treats all year. Funny enough this gift was given to me by my Mom. When looking for serving dishes glass I believe just looks more fun and are easier to clean than most dishes. These glass heart shaped dishes are great for serving vegetables, nuts and other treats. Sometimes the simplest foods can be made to look more appealing to your guests just by how you serve them. My Mom has a similar set at home and she uses it almost every holiday. She mainly uses it to serve her famous spinach dip with assorted vegetables, but there are so many options. I personally used mine the other day to serve chocolate covered raisins from Costco. They are my absolute favorite easy sweet to eat on a daily basis. I have seen similar glass dishes to this one at Bloomingdales and Saks Fifth Avenue, but you don’t need to necessarily get these dishes in a heart shape. Think about your Mom and what she loves to serve when guests come over and then go from there. Bed Bath & Beyond also has a great selection of glass dishes for serving and if you go online you can use their 20% coupon from your phone. We all know those are a gold mine because they never expire :-). I hope this helps all of you who are still looking for a gift for Mother’s Day which reminder is on Sunday! Crazy that I ran into people today at the store who didn’t realize it was this weekend.

Mother’s Day Week – Fitness Tuesday

May 9, 2017

Happy Tuesday! Normally on Just Jodi Style today would be Fitness Tuesday, but with Mother’s day around the corner I wanted to focus on a Mother’s Day fitness gift idea. Now personally I know that my mom wouldn’t come with me to SoulCycle or any of my work out classes, but she prefers to work out at home. I have previously posted about how she loves to take the stairs everyday in my parents office building as her form of exercise for the week, but not everyone has that luxury to do that. One of my friends recently told me that her Mom saw Khloe Kardashian using an ab roller wheel in one of her workouts and she wanted on herself. Now before I ever tell my Mom about any at home work out I like to test it out myself to see if I enjoy and also to make sure she it isn’t too much for her. This ab roller wheel I got from Amazon and it was only $15!!! First off such a steal at that price and secondly it was very easy to put together. It came in a small box and just a few pieces and I was rolling my way to flatter abs. I have noticed that the ab roller does work better and easier while using it on my carpet vs the hardwood floors. On the hardwood floors I felt like anytime I moved over a crack in the wood I felt like I was going over a speed bump. However, this is also difficult on marble floors because you don’t have as much control with the ab roller wheel as you would on carpet. I have personally bought one for my home in Miami for my Mom, but shh she doesn’t know it yet so nobody tell her please 🙂 . I hope everyone is having a great Tuesday so far and getting all of their last minute Mother’s Day gifts! This ab roller wheel is also available on Amazon Prime so you know it will definitely get there before Sunday!

Hump Day Treat: Sweet Potato Fries

April 5, 2017

Happy Wednesday! One of my favorite things to get when I go to Bareburger in New York City is there sweet potato fries. I have never made them for myself, but I thought this week I would give it a try. I gave it my own little twist to make them a little bit sweeter than they normally are. Here is what you will need

Ingredients:

– sweet potato ( if you are making for more than just yourself then add more)

-olive oil

-salt

– pepper

-cinnamon sugar

Directions

1.Preheat the oven to 450 degrees

2.Line cookie sheet with aluminum foil ( you can use parchment paper as well).

3.Coat the cookie sheet with cooking spray.

4.On a cutting board peel the sweet potato then cut it into slices.

5.In a bowl place the sweet potato slices and pour enough olive oil to coat all the slices. Sprinkle some salt and pepper and mix it all around.

6.Lay the slices on the cookie sheet in a single layer.

7.Sprinkle some cinnamon sugar on top of the slices.

8.Place in the oven and cook for about 15 minutes.

9.Take out of the oven and flip each slice over. If you want sprinkle a bit more cinnamon sugar on the other side. Then cook for another 10 – 15 minutes.

10.Take out of the oven and let them cool for about 10 minutes before eating.
ENJOY!

Fitness Tuesday- Cleaning in Heels?

April 4, 2017

Happy Tuesday! I can’t believe it is already April and summer is just around the corner. I have personally noticed that the work out classes I normally attend during the week have suddenly become more crowded the past few weeks. I guess everyone is trying to get into shape right before summer hits, but you don’t have to go to the gym to get a workout in. I read a few years ago that Audrina Patridge (you know her from the MTV reality show The Hills) used to clean her house while wearing high heels. This was really confusing to me because why would she willingly wear heels while cleaning your home? The answer is simple it is a great workout without even trying! Now I don’t suggest you mopping your floors while wearing heels in order not to slip and hurt yourself, but you really can do everything else in heels. I did this the other day while cleaning my apartment and my legs were so sore the next day! It also helped break in my heels that I haven’t worn since last summer. If you have a pair of shoes you are wanting to break in this is the time to do it. I have in the past worn socks in my heels to break them in, but now I think I will wear them while I am cleaning. I personally wore my black patent Steve Madden heels, but if you aren’t sure how you will handle cleaning in heels start out with a great pair of wedges. That may be easier for you in the long run during cleaning and like I previously said it will help break in your shoes more. Has anyone else tried this too? Comment below and let me know if it worked for you and if you would recommend it to your friends. Hope everyone has a great day despite this gloomy gross weather outside in New York City. <3

Hump Day Treat : Updated Grilled Cheese

March 29, 2017

Happy Wednesday! One of my favorite lunch meal at sleep away camp was the day we would have grilled cheese with tomato soup. I was never a big grilled cheese eater as a little kid until sleep away camp. There are so many different ways to reinvent a simple grilled cheese sandwich. For today’s hump day treat I want you all to try either of these combos: sharp white cheddar with avocado ( you add the avocado on top after you obviously melted the cheese)  or brie with raspberry jelly. If you are eating it with tomato soup my favorite thing to do is add shaved cheese on the soup while it’s still warm so it melts inside. I know exactly what I am having for dinner tonight :-). Hope everyone had a great day and for those of us in New York City I hope you are enjoying this beautiful weather we are having right now. <3
